The toughest time for parents can be when their children are poorly, injured or just plain inconsolable. Both my children suffered with colic and reflux but Littlest had a particularly tough time. She was born screaming and did not really stop for nearly a full year. Every afternoon, at around 2 pm, it would start.
And it would not stop until she finally fell asleep for a few hours, exhausted, at anywhere between 10 pm and 1 am.
It was one of the hardest times in my life. There was no letup, no relief and, as well as the physical and emotional demands of taking care of an inconsolable baby, I had the demands of a toddler who was freshly diagnosed with autism.
I must admit, I was not very good at taking care of myself at that time – one of the darkest in my life. I could definitely used some moments of home comfort.
