In July, for my 38th birthday, I received a beginner’s crochet set. It consisted of a case of hooks, needles, stitch markers, measuring tools and a book with some starting projects. Within a very short space of time, I was hooked, as it were, and over the course of the summer, I made several crochet projects for beginners. This is a hobby that I am finding extremely satisfying; it allows me to be creative and is soothing and great for my mental wellbeing. Therefore, I have decided to share some of the products and projects that I used over the course of my first summer of crochet.
Crochet Projects for Beginners: Crochet Tools
I was absolutely thrilled with the crochet case I received for my birthday. It has everything you need to get started, all the hooks and tools are good quality and it comes in a robust and attractive case.
As well as this beautiful crochet case, I also received a set of miniature yarns in many colours. This was a great thing to have when I started out, as I just practised a few techniques and stitches to begin. It was great to have lots of colours to use for practise without having to buy lots of different yarns.
Crochet Projects for Beginners 1: Rainbow Granny Square Blanket
This may seem like a very ambitious project and in some ways it was. However, making granny squares is one of the most well-known crochet skills. Also, once you have mastered making one, it is really easy to repeat the process and make bigger projects.
For my first project, I found Beginner’s Guide to Crochet: 20 projects for Beginners by Sarah Shrimpton a really useful tool. Not only does it have really clear and useful information and instructions on the types of stitches and techniques, but it also has several really beautiful projects to get you started that look amazing when finished.
I used the pattern Heirloom Blanket to make a rainbow blanket for my daughter.
Projects 2 and 3: Bears and Unicorns
For my second crochet project, I was also quite ambitious. However, I had another brilliant book which is invaluable if you ever want to make crochet animals. Edward’s Menagerie by Kerry Lord has enough patterns to keep you busy. There are enough animals to satisfy whatever wonderful creature your little one may want as a companion.
I used the patterns for Penelope the Bear and Chardonnay the Horse to create toys for my son and my daughter. The horse just had the one addition of a horn, stolen from one of the other animal patterns, in order to make a unicorn!
This book really does have endless variations and options. It is also a really great way to learn several crochet techniques, such as increasing and decreasing stitches to make shapes. I was certainly much more confident after I had completed a project from the book. At the moment, I am in the middle of making Emma the Bunny for Littlest.
Projects 4, 5 and 6 – Hats Galore
In many ways, it may have been more sensible for me to start my crochet learning curve with something more simple, like these hats. The pattern they use is really simple, as it is crocheting in rows, not in the round. The hats are seemed and gathered to make the hat shape once you have the correct size rectangle. I used this pattern for a Woodland Beanie by Hooked on Tilly on Etsy. Just be aware that you may have to modify it if using different yarn sizes! Other than that, it is just so easy to create beautiful hats with this pattern. I loved experimenting with different colours and types of yarn, and making hats for the whole family!
I have always been crafty and creative. Making things has always made me feel happy and content. Crochet is fast becoming one of my favourite ways to unwind and get creative. As I improve, I hope to share more projects with you. I also hope to come up with my own ideas for things to make and patterns. Stay tuned!
