This craft is really simple and can be adapted to suit all kinds of materials and wing types. For example, as well as creating a butterfly wings costume, you could make fairy wings, dragon wings, or any kind of winged creature you like. In addition, all kinds of materials can be used to create patterns in the wings. We used leftover yarn but almost anything fairly flat will work – from dried flowers to sequins, tissue paper and magazine cuttings.

This DIY Butterfly Wings Costume craft requires very few materials, but you will need an A4 laminator and laminator pouches.

Method:

Start by arranging the materials you have chosen inside the laminator pouches. You will need 4 A4 sheets for each set of wings. You could arrange almost anything that is relatively flat, from tissue paper to pressed flowers. We chose to use yarn, as I have a lot of spare and scrap yarn, thanks to my crochet obsession! My children loved arranging the patterns on their wings and even younger children can complete this part easily.

Take care to make sure that nothing is too close to the edges of the pouch. You may wish to place the DIY Butterfly Wings Template over your work, to make sure your items fill the right space.

Of course, you can use any shape to create your wings, by drawing your own or downloading other templates.

It is important NOT to cut the pouches until they have been laminated. Once you have the wings as you like them, pass through the laminator to set the items and create a great transparent wings effect.

Next, use the template to cut out the wing shapes. If you wish to use the wings as a decoration – as a suncatcher or piece of art for a child’s bedroom for example – you can leave it there.

However, if you want to make a wearable butterfly wing costume, you will need to attach the wings together and create string armholes. To attach the wings, it is better to use something sturdy, as this helps to keep the wings rigid when the child is wearing them. I used lolly sticks, formed into a cross shape and coloured with a marker. You could use card or plastic.

Glue or tape the wings to the cross of lolly sticks or card to create the right shape.

Finally, tie some yarn or string around the cross in two loops. The size of the loops is quite important for making sure the wings fit the child and stay upright. Therefore, you may want to measure by looping around the child’s arms to check for a snug fit before tying tightly.

In addition, I finished off the loops of yarn with some hot glue to hold them in place, but this may not be essential. You could also use tape to ensure that the string stays in place.

Once all glue is dry, you should have magical, wearable fairy or butterfly wings for your little one.
